Google is becoming smarter and smarter with every update.
More so, after the recent search engine algorithm update-Jagger!
Unlike other Google updates- Hilltop and Florida, which were
limited in improvement, Jagger update mainly aimed at removing
SPAM results from the search engine results pages (SERPs).
One area Jagger updates focused was the Link Networks
and related SPAM. Google upped its ante against people using
Link-Networks and other linking tricks as part of their Link
Popularity campaign to increase their websites' Page Rank
(PR).
People who participated in these link networks were affected
by the recent update as Google started to hit these kinds
of links. There websites dropped in rankings giving strong
indication that Google was and is even now very serious about
the nature and quality of Links people are using for their
websites. This area of improvement by Google has also been
discussed and hotly debated on various active forums and seminars.
Few discussions can be read here: Google
Knows Link Networks Well. This one is from Matt
Cutts at Google in his Official
Blog. More on Search
engine Q & A session on Links.
If you read then, you will come to one conclusion that First,
links are very important for your website. Second, always
go for quality theme based links. Irrelevant links can get
your website into trouble ("Google knows about your linking
networks, it knows about your traded links and even some of
your paid links." - Search Engine RoundTable). Third
AVOID Link Farms & Link- Networks. Forth
STOP BYUING LINKS or overdoing with reciprocal links!!! Google
is getting better and better at handling Paid Links.
In one of his blog, Matt
Cutts points out that buying back links from vetted sites
or networks will harm you and will do no good. He cited one
example where the site was excellent in terms of navigation
and crawling but Since they were buying links from sites where
other sites were buying and were being penalized, they were
NOT doing as good as they would have done without those NO-NO
links.
